• Sitting Is the New Smoking

The majority of the population knows that smoking is bad for your health and causes cancer. Now what if I told you that sitting is more dangerous for your health than smoking?  The Los Angeles Times recently interviewed Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative and he researched this very statement. Dr. Levine concluded that sitting everyday and being sedentary increases the risk of developing several serious illnesses. Dr. Levine has been studying the adverse effects of our increasingly sedentary lifestyles for years and he has summed up his findings in two sentences.

"Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”

Levine is credited with creating that saying -- "sitting is the new smoking" -- but he's not the only one who has jumped on board the bandwagon. Researchers continue to find more and more evidence that prolonged sitting increases the risk of developing serious illnesses like various types of cancer, heart disease and type-2 diabetes.
Another reason the smoking analogy is relevant is that studies have repeatedly shown the effects of long-term sitting are not easily reversible through exercise or other good habits due to the fact that we continue to spend a lot of time seated and sedentary. Sitting, like smoking, is very clearly bad for our health and the only ways to minimize the risk is to limit the time we spend on our butts each day and get a variety of healthy movement. We need to continue to challenge our bodies physically, psychologically and mentally to stay sharp and healthy as we age.

  • Is Your Diet Doomed?

Unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past few months, you have heard of the sweeping changes of the recommendations from the USDA for daily consumption. One of the main changes made was to cease and desist the befouling of cholesterol and fat in the American diet. It has long been the stance of the USDA that fat and cholesterol were evil and should be to some extent replaced with processed grains and carbohydrates. While this theory provided the necessary stimulus to the biggest contributors of the USDA, namely the corn refineries, sugar producers and fast food companies; this information was fraudulent and sensationalized. The truth is that in the the replacement of grains, refined or otherwise whole, did not reduce the overall risk for heart disease or high blood pressure. The second change was to finally reduce the amount of sugar (processed or naturally occurring) in our daily diet. Do me a favor and check how much sugar is in everything you eat. For example, 1 tablespoon of ketchup contains 3.7 grams of sugar, which is equivalently 22% of the total weight. Sugar is added to pretty much every processed food to increase palletability and quality control on taste regardless of time spent on the shelf.

We at CrossFit Lake Zurich purpose a Paleo diet that consists of lean means, a variety of colorful vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Our clients that adhere to this diet see amazing results not only in weight loss but also increased energy, clearer skin, better sleep and overall improvement in bio-metric markers. The first step for many is to unchain yourself from the addiction of sugar. There are plenty of publications that speak to this process and one recent book that is well written and insightful is "The Blood Sugar Solution" by Dr. Mark Hyman. Make this small change to your diet today to see amazing changes in the days following. BTW you're welcome!

  • Happy Mobility Monday!

    Happy Mobility Monday!

Here at CrossFit Lake Zurich, we are creating a tradition of excellence in fitness. Our continuum starts with mobility, then progresses to stability, movement competency, strength/skill and then intensity. This is just one ingredient in the "special sauce" that sets us apart.

At the start of every week, we focus on getting back to zero by resetting those tight muscle groups and restricted ranges of motion. If you spend some time early in the week addressing your problem areas, the rest of the week will be a lot more enjoyable.

Spend 10 minutes today, apart from your training to address your problem areas. My suggestion would be to start at your feet/ankles. In my clinical experience, 9/10 people suffer dysfunction at the foot/ankle that in turn cause a host of problems up the chain. If you have not familiarized yourself with K-Star and Mobility WOD by now, click the video below to get to know the top cat in this field.
